These small format abstractions are formal constructions that are never preplanned. I use a "call and response" approach to make them, always striving for a visual balance through opposing weights. Typically, I'll begin with a limited palette or color idea. I like to use an approach of moving the color after each touch. So, colors in a shared hue are never the same which adds color complexity and allows the viewer to discover subtleties across the surface of the work.
